Michiel van der Veen is a business leader, expert in biometrics and keen cycling enthusiast. He is a regular industry contributor, addressing issues around digital identity, security and the challenges facing countries in their drive towards more inclusive and universal identity systems. Michiel has worked with governments across sub-Suharan Africa for many years, helping to deliver large scale identity programs in his role as CEO of GenKey, the biometrics company.
Michiel founded Biometrics Africa to be a practical resource for the identity community. The aim is to share insights and ideas about biometrics and how it’s helping to shape the identity landscape in Africa. Whether it’s about government strategy or operational issues. Michiel’s approach is to provide simple, actionable solutions to complex problems.
Michiel has a Ph.D from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and further business education at Stanford. In 2008 he founded priv-ID (an off-shoot of Philips) and since 2011, has been CEO of GenKey, a trusted leader in digital identity and biometrics.
